The history of the “Brassie”                                                 Please wait for pictures to load

A typical modern 3-wood has 15 degrees of loft. The Brassie we will supply you with will have a similar loft.

A “Brassie” is technically any fairway wood. In the mid 19th century a golfer would play most of his long shots with fairway woods of differing lofts, rather than irons as they were less likely to cut the expensive feather-filled leather balls. Golf became much more popular after 1848 and the introduction of the gutta-percha rubber ball. The game became affordable for the masses and lots of courses were constructed inland.  The bottom of the wooden fairway clubs, suited to playing from fine coastal turf, began to suffer from premature wear on the harsher inland soils. To combat this inventive club makers fitted brass plates to the soles of clubs and the term “Brassie” was born.
