The history of the “Niblick”

A typical 9-iron iron has 46 degrees of loft. The Niblick we will supply you with will have a similar loft.

A “Niblick” is an iron headed club with a large amount of loft. It’s ancestor was the “rut iron” which was used for extracating the ball from the tracks made by carts as they crossed the common links ground. The heads of “rut irons” were only just slightly bigger than the ball and so were very difficult to use. Towards the end of the 19th century the heads of “rut irons” grew slightly to become “rut niblicks”. The true origin of the term “niblick” baffles linguists to this day, although it is seems quite plausible that it relates to the action of “nipping” or “nibbling” the ball off the turf. By 1910 golfers were seeking to play more loft-and-stop shots and consequently the head size of the average niblick increased to make play easier. This growth in size peaked with the “Mammoth Niblick” which can have a head as much as six inches in diameter, and such clubs are very prized by collectors.
