Harry Vardon & Ted Ray Golf Medals
In the summer of 2015 my wife and I took a trip to Jersey, the largest of the Channel Islands. Knowing that both Harry Vardon and Ted Ray both came from the Channel Islands I didn't take much persuading to go. On one of the days we took a tour around the coast road and eventually came to Grouville, the town of Harry's birth. I saw the statue of Harry at the entrance to the Royal Jersey Golf club and expected to find lots of interesting things inside. I was sadly dissapointed. Whilst there were some things about Harry Vardon they were very scarce. I know that Harry caddied on the course, but actually started as an assistant professional in England. Perhaps that was why there was nothing of any note there.
The next day I decided to have a look in St.Helier museum...I very nearly didn't as the advertising flyers for the museum didn't mention Harry Vardon at all. So you can imagine my reaction when going up the stairs between floors of fossils and ancient pottery when I spotted out of the corner of my eye on a landing a glass cabinet. Again, I very nearly didn't bother looking to see what it contained...if I'd have taken the lift I would have missed it!. I was amazed to find I had stumbled upon what could be considered to be one of the world's most important collection of golfing medals. Yes, on display in a very humble corner of the museum was Harry Vardon's and Ted Ray's golfing medals.
The battery on my phone was nearly out but thankfully it lasted just long enough for me to take the following snapshots which I hope will be of interest. When leaving the museum I did speak to the staff and suggested they should promote their collection a little better...and place it in a better spot...they didn't seem that interested, which was quite dissapointing. I don't think they appreciate what they've got.
